India 3 wickets away from victory at Lunch on Day 4 of 2nd Test vs England
By admin | | 0 Comments |

India inched closer to a series-levelling win at Chepauk by picking up 4 wickets in the first session of Day 4 of the 2nd Test against England.Dan Lawrence and Joe Root walked out to bat with England needing over 400 runs to win the Test match. The former didn't last long, as a brilliant piece of work from Rishabh Pant off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin caught him short of his ground.Root then had Ben Stokes for company. The England all-rounder was beaten on numerous occasions, and his only scoring shot - the sweep - didn't fetch him a single boundary in the 51 balls he faced. Eventually, he was dismissed by Ashwin for just 8 runs, leaving the visitors staring down the barrel.Axar Patel joined in on the fun by dismissing Ollie Pope, before Kuldeep Yadav was denied his first wicket in over two years by Mohammed Siraj, who shelled a straightforward chance at backward point. Kuldeep found a breakthrough in his next over, however. The left-arm wrist-spinner had Ben Foakes caught on the leg-side on the stroke of lunch, and was visibly relieved after the scalp. England are placed at 116/7 at Lunch on Day 4, with Root waging a lone battle on 33 off 90 balls.India should be able to wrap things up in the second session Ashwin will be eyeing a 10-wicket haulGiven the amount of turn the pitch is producing and the unerring accuracy of the Indian bowlers, this Test is unlikely to be dragged into the final session on Day 4. Moeen Ali, Olly Stone and Stuart Broad are the only three English batsmen left.Ashwin, who has taken 3 wickets so far this innings, will look to scalp two more and record his 8th 10-wicket match haul in Test cricket. If he does so, he will become the first Indian cricketer and 5th overall (after Shakib Al Hasan, Imran Khan, Ian Botham and Alan Davidson) to have accomplished this feat. “Miracle Miracle!” – Fans rejoice after Kuldeep Yadav finally gets a wicket
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Kuldeep Yadav has had a tough few years. Once the gem of India’s spin bowling attack, the left-arm bowler has been on the sidelines for India for a while now. He was even dropped by his IPL franchise, with Kolkata Knight Riders preferring Varun Chakravarthy in IPL 2020.While Kuldeep Yadav finally got a chance to impress in the 2nd Test against England, he has struggled to assert himself. He bowled just 6 overs in the first innings, failing to pick up a wicket. The bowler didn't get many opportunities to bowl, with Virat Kohli preferring to go with Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin. His bad luck continued in the 2nd innings. Kuldeep Yadav came on to bowl only in the 43rd over and saw Mohammed Siraj drop a sitter off his bowling. To add insult to injury, it was Joe Root who got the lifeline. But luck finally turned Kuldeep’s way, as the bowler picked up Ben Foakes' wicket a few moments later. The wicket-keeper couldn’t keep his sweep shot down and found Axar Patel, who didn’t make any mistake.Fans on Twitter couldn’t keep calm after Kuldeep Yadav finally got a wicket. “Last time I was sweeping, I was 19” – Ravichandran Ashwin reflects on memorable hundred
By admin | | 0 Comments |

After scoring his fifth Test hundred on Day 3 of the second Test against England in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed that playing sweep shots against the spinners was a well thought out strategy.Ashwin scored 106 from only 148 balls in India’s second-innings total of 286, on a surface that some experts deemed unfit for Test cricket.Speaking at the end of the day’s play, the 34-year-old stated that he will sleep well through the night to recover. On his plan to use the sweep shot to counter England’s slow bowlers, Ashwin explained:“Even after the last Test, we spoke about how we are going to counter (Jack) Leach and probably bring sweep to the game. Last time I was sweeping, I was 19 years old, and was dropped from the first XI after I got out. I hit a bit of sweep shots well today. I am thankful the plan has paid off. Sort of had a very good day. I don't know when I will play my next Test here, but I'm very pleased.”Ravichandran Ashwin was the last man out as India set England an improbable 482 to win the Test.Credit to Vikram Rathour for improvement in my batting: Ravichandran AshwinDuring his innings, Ravichandran Ashwin featured in a 96-run stand for the seventh wicket with Indian captain Virat Kohli. He notched up his first Test hundred since August 2016, and first against a team other than the West Indies. The veteran off-spinner credited batting coach Vikram Rathour for the significant improvement in his batting over the last few matches, including the Sydney blockathon. Praising Rathour, Ravichandran Ashwin said:“I have started practicing the sweep; I can't say if it has just been happening over the last three days. Vikram Rathour has been helpful in exploring new options. I'd love to credit him for how I've played with the bat in the last few months.” On the discussion between him and Mohammed Siraj as he approached his hundred on his home ground, Ravichandran Ashwin said it was a bit light-hearted. He revealed:“In the past, he's (Ishant Sharma) been with me when I got hundreds at home and once Siraj came, I knew how to approach. I was just telling Siraj to look at the line of the ball and go wherever he wants. It was a funny thing and it was exciting to see how he [Siraj] celebrated and that says a few things about the dressing room. The moment I got the runs and looked up at the balcony, the applause was thunderous. I can't thank the crowd enough, they have been very supportive.”England crumbled to 53 for 3 at stumps on Day 3 of the Test. Axar Patel picked up two wickets, while Ravichandran Ashwin scalped one. Kohli-Ashwin partnership helps India take 351-run lead into Lunch on Day 3
By admin | | 0 Comments |

A solid 50-run partnership between captain Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin helped India take firm control of the 2nd Test against England. At lunch on Day 3, the hosts are placed at 156/6, and hold a massive 351-run lead.India began the day 249 runs ahead of England, and they didn't get off to the best of starts. Cheteshwar Pujara was run out for 7 in bizarre fashion early in the piece as his bat got stuck in the pitch. Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant failed to occupy the crease for long, leaving Kohli and Ashwin to steady the ship.Ashwin pulled out a wide range of sweeps against the England spinners, and has moved to 34 off just 38 balls. He was handed a repreive by Ben Stokes, who spilled a sharp catch at first slip off Stuart Broad.Kohli, on the other hand, was circumspect throughout his innings. Trusting his defence and playing with a straight bat, the Indian skipper has notched up 38 off 86 balls. He put away the bad balls and ran hard between the wickets, and appeared assured on what is certainly a tough pitch to bat on.India in prime position to level the series 1-1 Ashwin swept and reverse swept confidentlyWith 8 sessions left in the Test match, India are firmly in the driver's seat. If Kohli and Ashwin can stretch this lead by another 50 runs or so, England will be set a target of over 400.Given that they scored only 134 in the first innings, it will be an impossible task for them to chase down the target and take a commanding 2-0 lead. As things stand, Kohli's men are in prime position to level the 4-match series 1-1.This Test is important in the context of the World Test Championship, as India need to beat England in this series to make the final against New Zealand. The Ravi Ashwin show continues on day 3, England need 429 runs more
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Ravichandran Ashwin after his century. (Picture Courtesy – BCCI) XtraTime Web Desk – Whether with the bowl or with the bat, Ravi Ashwin show continues at Chepauk. The batsman Ashwin has showed glimpses of returning back into runs on few occasions but his masterclass on Monday showed that it was just a matter of time. India lost some quick wickets early on into the game. Cheteshwar Pujara was once again very unlucky with his dismissal and Rishabh Pant, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Axar Patel failed to create any impact. Ben Foakes was brilliant for England. His keeping technique, quick stumpings and decision making was top notch and that put India into back foot. Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin brought some stability after the dismissals. The duo made a crucial 96 run partnership to bring India out of that phase. Kohli made 62 runs and was dismissed by Moeen Ali. Thus, missing another century. Ashwin however didn’t miss his. With the tailenders by his side, Ashwin completed his well deserved century. A lot of praises were showered upon him on internet. He now is in the second place in the table where a player has taken a fifer and scored a hundred. Only Ian Botham is ahead of him. With his century, India posed a healthy total of 286 runs. Moeen Ali and Jack Leach picked up 4 wickets each but England has a mammoth target to chase. They already lost 3 wickets and ended the day with 53 on board. Axar Patel picked up the wickets of Dom Sibley and Jack Leach while Ashwin once again picked up Rory Burns’ wicket. England now need 429 runs to win and as things stand, it’ll be a mountain to climb for the English players. .

“I am extremely impressed with Rishabh Pant’s keeping today” – Sunil Gavaskar
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Rishabh Pant for his excellent glovework behind the wickets in England's first innings of the second Test in Chennai.Rishabh Pant held two acrobatic catches on the second day of the Test to get rid of Ollie Pope and Jack Leach. He also looked assured while keeping on a tough track, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel getting the ball to turn and bounce viciously.I have enjoyed these two catches from Rishabh Pant as much as I have enjoyed his batting....— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) February 14, 2021While reviewing the day's proceedings on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar spoke in glowing terms about Rishabh Pant's wicketkeeping and his desire to learn. The former Indian skipper disclosed that Ricky Ponting, Pant's head coach at the Delhi Capitals, was also effusive in his praise for the youngster's willingness to put in the hard yards."I am extremely impressed with Rishabh Pant's keeping today. I spent a lot of time with Ricky Ponting recently in Australia and he was praising Rishabh Pant's work ethic a lot. He was telling that Pant is a young player who wants to improve," said Gavaskar."Ponting told that when Pant had come for the IPL he was a little over-weight. So, when he was asked to reduce his weight a little, he put a lot of hard work and lost a lot of weight and was back to his normal weight when he reached Australia," added the former Indian batsman."Rishabh Pant thinks a lot about his cricket" - Sunil Gavaskar Rishabh Pant has been preferred over Wriddhiman Saha because of his match-winning abilities Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that Rishabh Pant has also been learning the tricks of the trade from Wriddhiman Saha."We have also heard that Rishabh Pant sits with Wriddhiman Saha every evening and discusses about wicket-keeping. Everyone knows that Wriddhiman Saha is the No.1 keeper if we talk about only wicket-keeping but the Indian team needs an all-rounder who can play destructive knocks just like Rishabh Pant is doing, because of which he has been selected ahead of Saha," observed Gavaskar. The cricketer-turned-commentator concluded by stating that Rishabh Pant is a thinking cricketer although he may seem like a happy-go-lucky character."Pant is still trying to learn from Saha by giving him the respect and it is because of that we are seeing the improved wicket-keeping performances. This guy looks carefree the way he bats but thinks a lot about his cricket and it is a very good thing for Indian cricket," Sunil Gavaskar signed off.Rishabh Pant certainly stood out behind the stumps in England's first innings of the second Test in Chennai. However, the fourth innings of the Test will present an even bigger challenge, and a good performance there will give him immense confidence. Published 14 Feb 2021, 18:14 IST .

Important to not feel too down about it: Graham Thorpe on game situation in Chennai
By admin | | 0 Comments |

England batting coach Graham Thorpe has admitted that the side is disappointed with the huge deficit they are facing after two days of the second Test in Chennai. He, however, added that it was important for the visitors to remain positive despite being on the backfoot. After India posted 329 in their first innings, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ran through the England batting line-up with excellent figures of 5 for 43.Debutant left-arm spinner Axar Patel also picked up two scalps, including the big one of England skipper Joe Root for six. Speaking at a post-match conference, Graham Thorpe admitted that things did not go according to plan for England. He said:“We didn’t execute our plans. There were some good deliveries and fine catches as well from India today. We know we wanted to do better. We are definitely disappointed with the deficit in the game after two days. However, it is important we don’t allow ourselves to get too down about it.”Some players are playing here for the first time: Graham ThorpeGraham Thorpe, who played exactly 100 Tests for England, pointed out that there is some inexperience in this English line-up.The 51-year-old believes this inexperience was exploited by India, who took full advantage of the home conditions. Thorpe continued: “Sometimes when you are playing at home, you have certainly got an advantage. We all know about India’s record at home. Their spinners are experienced bowling on these surfaces. We have got some players who are playing for the first time in this part of the world. So we have to keep that in perspective for our players as well.”When asked about how England are planning to tackle India’s spin challenge, Graham Thorpe, who was considered among the better batsmen against slow bowling, explained:“While playing spin, you have to pick the length well. That puts you in a position to either be able to score or trust your defence, if you cannot actually score. That’s how we try to simplify the plan for the players.”India ended Day 2 of the Chennai Test at 54 for 1 in their second innings, with Rohit Sharma unbeaten on 25 and Cheteshwar Pujara on 7. The hosts now have an overall lead of 249 runs. Published 14 Feb 2021, 18:05 IST .

When he walked out to bat towards the end of Day 1, Rohit Sharma was just dismissed for a brilliant hundred.Ajinkya Rahane soon followed Rohit and Team India were depended on the 23-year-old to take them to a daunting first-innings total. Rishabh Pant didn't quite get the support he was expecting from his partners at the other end. However, he took calculative risks and dominated the opposition bowlers. His assault on Jack Leach in the first Test played on England skipper Joe Root's mind and that certainly kept the left-arm spinner out of the attack. After bringing up his sixth Test half-century, Pant was at his best through his chatter behind the stumps. Knew the pitch would turn from Day 1: Ajinkya Rahane
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has admitted that the hosts were aware that the surface at Chepauk for the second Test against England would start turning from the first day itself.Following India’s 227-run defeat in the first Test in Chennai, there were speculations that the pitch for the second Test at the same venue would be a rank turner.India won the toss and batted first, reaching 300-6 at stumps, thanks to a belligerent 161 from Rohit Sharma and a well-compiled 68 from Ajinkya Rahane.Speaking at the end of the first day’s play, Ajinkya Rahane described the conditions as 'something to be expected' in India, when he said:“I thought it was proper Indian conditions, and we knew it (the pitch) would turn from day one.”On what the team's thinking was after winning the toss and batting first, Ajinkya Rahane said that it was all about building partnerships.“We were talking about partnerships - Rohit and Pujara, and then Rohit and myself. We were discussing intent - positive intent on this wicket. What happened in the first game was (in the) past,” observed Ajinkya Rahane. You can't be too defensive on this wicket: Ajinkya Rahane Ajinkya Rahane observed that the wicket is a tricky one to bat on due to the amount of turn it offered on Day 1. Hence, defensive play on this surface could be fraught with risk. Elaborating further on the same, the vice-captain also praised Rohit Sharma’s hundred, saying:“You can't be too defensive on this wicket, and need to be one step ahead of the opposition. We discussed in our batting meeting on what shots to play, and we had to make them change the game-plan. And that's what Rohit did (playing sweeps). 150-plus on this wicket is really good. I enjoyed the cover-drive against Moeen Ali against the spin.”While Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Rohit Sharma (161) added 162 runs for the fourth wicket, England fought back well in the last session. The visitors dismiss both batsmen and Ravichandran Ashwin (13) as well, but India ended the day on the ascendancy. On the plan for Day 2, the Indian vice-captain said that one more decent partnership could see the hosts take control of the game, saying:“Add another 50-60 runs from here. One more partnership from Rishabh and Axar...we're in the game. When they were adjusting the pace and bowling quicker through the air, it was difficult.” At stumps on Day 1 of the second Test in Chennai, Rishabh Pant was unbeaten on 33, while debutant Axar Patel was giving his fellow left-hander company on 5.
